Legislative Initiatives

When we are tasked with administering new legislative reform, we aim to develop simple ways for customers to easily meet their obligations and avoid unnecessary red tape.

This year, the Victorian Government announced significant changes for taxi and hire car, including rideshare, services and vacant housing stock in inner Melbourne. These are the Commercial Passenger Vehicle Services Levy and the Vacant Residential Land Tax, ready for implementation in 2018.

To meet the challenges of these tight timeframes, we used a collaborative and agile workplan to consult heavily with industry stakeholders in the early stages, which enabled us to introduce tailored administrative processes and IT system changes.

This strategy focused on two essentials to guarantee success: finding an easy way for customers to do business with us, and educating them about their new obligations.

The trip levy of $1 per ride will apply to taxi, hire car and rideshare services, and be paid quarterly.

The Vacant Residential Land Tax is an annual charge of 1 per cent of a vacant property’s capital improved value, and applies to 16 municipal council areas of inner Melbourne.
